WHAT IS COVERED IN LEARN2ROW?

In the four session course, you will learn the basics of sculling (rowing with two blades). This will start with land training and a safety talk before moving to the water. If weather conditions are poor then sessions will stay on land.

LAND TRAINING

Using the club’s rowing machines, a coach takes learners through the positions and timings of the stroke helping to coordinate your limbs. You will also learn some useful exercises that you will be able to transfer to the water training as well as the all-important terminology.

WATER TRAINING

Initially you will take turns to use the club’s learner boats to help you understand how body position and symmetry play a vital role in balancing the boat. You will learn to move the boat backwards, forwards and turn. When the session coach has seen a good improvement from the group, you will then go into a quad (a boat for 4 people) where you will learn to use the skills you have built up and how to row in a crew. Attendance to all dates is essential as a quad can only go out if all 4 people attend.

DOES EVERYONE COMPLETE THE COURSE?

Progression through the course is dependent upon the individual’s needs and learners will not be moved to the next step until the coach is confident that they are ready. We do not have a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ outcome as some learners have had previous experience and others are completely new to the sport. The only time we would deem a situation to be a failure is if you did not enjoy yourself. We expect you to complete all 4 sessions of your course (as dated on the website) if you wish to become a member of Swindon Rowing Club after the course.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE COURSE?

You will be able to join Swindon Rowing Club as a full member. You will still need continued coaching but we can set up regular sessions for you to improve. If you want to join a different rowing club, you can still state that you have completed a learn2row course with us to give your new club an idea of your experience.
